What is a TTRPG / RPG?
A tabletop role-playing game (typically abbreviated as TRPG or TTRPG, or an RPG - Role Playing Game), also known as a pen-and-paper role-playing game, is a classification for a role-playing game (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters' actions through speech. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a set formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.
The terms pen-and-paper and tabletop are generally only used to distinguish this format of RPG from other formats, since neither pen and paper nor a table are strictly necessary.
I have no experience of this - can I still play?
No previous experience is necessary! Anyone can enjoy the fun and freedom of TTRPGs which are suitable for all ages, ethnicities, academic ability levels and genders!
What if I do not have a group to play with?
By contacting us, we can put you in touch with groups seeking players to join them, both online and in person which you would be able to join. It is a great way to meet new people and make new friends!
How old do you have to be to play an RPG?
RPGs are suitable for all age groups, from young children to older adults. We would recommend the age of 8 as a good starting age and would choose or modify games to be suitable to that age group. For adult players, games can be as creative as the best blockbuster Hollywood films and all they might entail!
Is it expensive?
Through Gwyn-Wood's Dungeon, all costs are met by us (bar the Games Keeper fee of course!). Rulebooks and the time needed to study and learn them can be financially and time demanding. Purchasing dice, figures, battlemaps, props and any ready-made adventures and campaigns can also hit the purse strings! Luckily, you won't need to worry about that!
How long do RPGs last?
RPGs can last from anything from 1 session of an hour to years of sessions! It all depends on you - do you want to play oneshot adventures which may last between 1 and 6 hours (the shorter typically played in on session and the longer over two sessions)? Or would you rather build and develop a character up over a longer period of time? Most campaigns last for a number of sessions but this can always be disccussed and agreed upon with your games master.
A single session normally lasts around two to three hours.
